In the 10 years of its existence, the ERCCT has established a sound reputation as a platform for social science-based research on contemporary Taiwan and scholarly exchange among Taiwan scholars from all around the world. With a focus on assisting PhD and postdoc students to progress in their research, the center provides office space and access to all university facilities for resident and visiting fellows, and hosts visiting scholars throughout the academic year. As a ‘joint venture’ of the Chiang Ching Kuo-Foundation and the University of Tübingen, the ERCCT figures as one of four CCK Foundation Overseas Centers with a mission to promote Taiwan studies in Europe and beyond. It runs different programs for visiting scholars, hosts workshops (among them an annual Taiwan-Europe Young Scholars workshop) and also organizes cultural events for the broader public. With the recent appointment of a Junior (Assistant) Professor of Taiwan Studies affiliated to both the Department of Chinese Studies and the ERCCT, the center has the additional capacity needed to broaden its activities and, most importantly, to secure additional external funding. These positive developments have been made possible thanks to positive-minded university authorities, a dedicated (though small) staff and long-term ground support by the CCK Foundation.  However, challenges remain, most notably concerning the recruitment of young scholars willing to build their careers on studying Taiwan in an increasingly competitive academic market.
